====Mission, Aims and Objectives==== **The Mission** To become a leading regional center which will play a catalytic role in education and training in marine environmental management through effective co-operation and collaboration between APEC economies in order to promote sustainable development **The Aims and Objectives** (i) To stimulate strategic thinking on marine environmental issues common to the APEC economies, and to serve as a forum for consultation and dialogue; (ii) To assist APEC economies in effectively addressing marine environmental problems to promote sustainable development through finding appropriate technical solutions and in strengthening their institutional capacity in marine environmental management; (iii) To assess, adapt and develop appropriate analytical methodologies for marine environmental studies in the APEC region; (iv) To serve as an avenue to strengthen marine environmental cooperation and collaboration among marine environmental institutions and organizations (both public and private) in the APEC region, and to promote technology transfer; and (v) To complement the work of international organizations ====AMETEC since 1997==== Since AMETEC was formally opened in November 2003, there have technically been only five AMETEC Training Sessions between then and the present (November 2005); however, several training workshops or symposia were held before November 2003 by KORDI on behalf of APEC MRC WG and we have considered these as de facto AMETEC activities. __**1997** November 2-15:__\\ "POPs in the marine environment" \\ 14 trainees from 6 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here - list1997\\ __**1998** November 2-15:__\\ "Trace metals in the marine environment" \\ 14 trainees from 8 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list from - list1998\\ __**1999** Sep.28 - Oct.11:__\\ "Marine Environmental Conservation"\\ 20 trainees from 14 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here - list1999\\ __**2000** November 10-27:__\\ "POPs in the marine environment" \\ 19 trainees from 9 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here - list2000\\ __**2001** October 15-November 3:__\\ "Protection of the marine environment from sewage" \\ 18 trainees from 10 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here - list_sewage\\ __**2002** August 12-31__\\ "Oil in the Marine Environment"\\ 15 trainees from 7 economies, 5 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:"list_oil"\\ __**2003** June 23-July 11:__\\ "POPs in the marine environment" \\ 16 trainees from 8 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_POPs\\ __**2003** November 15 - 29:__\\ "Protection of the marine environment from sewage"\\ 14 trainees from 9 economies; 5 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_waste\\ __**2004** June 13 - July 5 :__\\ "Protection of the marine environment from persistent organic pollutants." \\ 16 trainees from 10 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_org __**2004** October 10-23:__\\ "Impact of oil spills on the marine environment: – Current knowledge and future strategies" 16 trainees from 7 economies; 3 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_impact __**2005** June 12 - July 3:__\\ "Nanopollutants and Ecotoxicology" \\ 18 trainees from 11 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_nano\\ __**2005** October 31 - November 18:__\\ "Protection of the marine environment from oil pollution"\\ 13 trainees from 7 economies; 6 "outside" experts.\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_oilb __**2006** June 3-25:__ "Marine Environmental Sampling"\\ 16 trainees from 6 economies; 4 "outside" experts. ..\\ see the list here:list_sampling __**2006** October 16-27:__ "Nutrient Analysis and Quality Assurance/Quality Control: Enhancing reliability and comparability of data for the Integrated Environmental Monitoring program\\ 20 trainees from 8 economies; 4 "outside" experts.\\ This training was held outside KORDI at the University of Philippines for the first time. The course took the form of a simple experimental study. Four days before the course began, olive flounder (//Paralichthys olivaceous//) obtained from a local fish farm were exposed to various experimental treatments. After a series of introductory lectures on November 3 and 4, trainees were instructed in methods of killing the fish, dissecting, measuring and preserving relevant tissues, preparing tissue homogenates required for subsequent analysis, measuring the protein content of tissues (to which later analyses were normalised), measuring CYP1A and its catalytic activity ethoxyresorufin O-de-ethylase (EROD), and finally measuring the presence of aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites in fish bile.\\ This workshop was conducted in collaboration with APEC at the South Sea Research Center, KORDI, Geoje-shi, Korea\\ ..\\ see the list here:list_nov2008 __**2009** October 13-22:__ "Oil Spill: Chemistry and Biochemical Responses"\\ 10 participants from 7 countries; one foreign expert\\ The course focussed on measurement of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Sea water and of induction of the Cytochrome P-450 1A (CYP1A) system in fish liver by exposure to pollutants, exemplified by oil. ..\\ see the list here:list_Oct2009 ====List of countries participated:==== Since its formal inception in 2003, AMETEC has trained approximately 100 trainees from 10 APEC economies\\ Chile, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam and __10 other countries__ Brasil, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Myanmar, Samoa, Sri Lanka and Uruguay ====List of agencies supporting AMETEC==== AMETEC is principally supported by the Korean Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). On an annual basis APEC supports the travel expenses of foreign experts attending the Training, Steering Committee meeting and Sumposium. When Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)sponsors a training it supports the travel expenses of participants and per diem alloted to them. When Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) supports a training it provides secratorial services. ====AMETEC Pool of Experts==== AMETEC utilizes the talents of experts available in the APEC economies to enhance each training.
