Training on Nutrient Analysis - Oct. 2006

Training on Nutrient Analysis and Quality Assurance/Quality Control: Enhancing Reliability and Comparability of Data for the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP)
14-28 October 2006
Quezon City, Philippines

Organizers and Sponsors

• APEC Marine Environmental Training and Education Center (AMETEC)
• GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Programme on Partnership in Environmental Management for Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)
• National Science Research Institute (NSRI), University of the Philippines Diliman
• Marine Science Institute (MSI), University of the Philippines Diliman

Participants
Participants to the training course come from Cambodia, DPR Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, PR China, Thailand and Vietnam.

The theme of the training workshop will be on nutrients in coastal waters.

There has been a growing interest in this area of environmental research in the past decades. This interest arises from problems such as eutrophication and particularly the appearance of toxic cyanobacterial infestations in water supply storages. Research has also pointed to previously unrecognized effects of nutrients such as the toxicity of phosphorus to coral reef areas. Environmental managers have been forced to set increasingly stringent criteria with regard to the levels of nutrients in aquatic systems. Concomitant with this has been the development of nutrient removal processes for sewage treatment plants and changes to agricultural practices, to minimize the loss of nutrients through runoff from rural areas.

The result has been that the analytical chemist is confronted by a demand for state-of-the-art methodology used for the design of the sampling programme, removal of the sample from the environment, preservation, analytical techniques and use of quality assurance procedures.

The present workshop will offer hands-on training on all aspects of nutrient analysis. Lectures have been interspersed with the laboratory activity to explain the theory behind the analytical techniques and also to assist in the review and interpretation of data. It is hoped that at the end of this workshop, attendees will return to their organisations equipped with the ability to generate quality data pertaining to nutrient levels in waters.

For the first time in the history of AMETEC its training has been conducted outside its premises viz. South Sea Institute, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI), Geoje, Republic of Korea. The two weeks training will be conducted at the Natural Sciences Research Institute, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, which is a co-sponsor of this program along with the GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Programme on Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA). In addition, the UP Marine Science Institute has also agreed to provide its facilities for the training.

The training workshop will be conducted from 14 – 28 October 2006. A total of 19 participants from PEMSEA participating countries, i.e. Cambodia, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam will participate in this workshop. Experts from Australia, Republic of Korea and Philippines will conduct the training.
