Marine Pollution: Current Issues and Emerging Technologies in Monitoring and Assessment

A topical symposium featuring lectures presented by international speakers and poster presentations contributed by young researchers and graduate students

Theme and Objective

The rapid growth of industrial activities in the coastal regions surrounding Yellow Sea , Eastern Sea and South China sea has raised increasing concern on the pollution problems and ecotoxicity effects caused by man-made pollutants. This symposium attempts to provide a forum for the exchange and sharing of updated scientific information and technical development on issues related to environmental monitoring, pollution impact assessment and fishery safety. Our objective is to help develop and promote collaborations among institutions and researchers in the region towards our common goal of achieving sustainable development of the marine environment.

AMETEC TRAINING COURSE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLING

This is a preliminary announcement of a training course planned by AMETEC to be held in the KORDI South Sea Institute from June 3 to 25.

Marine environmental sampling is required in programmes to assess both general spatial and temporal environmental trends, and the impacts of "catastrophic" events such as major oil spills. The objectives of this course are (i) to introduce laboratory personnel and middle managers to the concepts underlying marine environmental sampling, and (ii) to teach the techniques used to sample sediment, water, and biota, and to identify and eliminate potentially confounding variables.

The course will consist of a series of lectures by experienced staff from KORDI, from North American laboratories and and HongKong City University, interspersed with "hands-on" sampling and laboratory analyses. The course will be funded by KOICA, APEC and KORDI

The selection process is initiated by KOICA using its agencies in Asia-Pacific Economies and so if you are interested in this course, please be in touch with Korean Embassy in your country or KOICA agents in your country
